A Kingdom of Priests: John’s Gospel and the Story of Exodus

In this special Sunday School session, we take time to explore the Gospel of John through a particular lens: John as a retelling of the Exodus story. By tracing themes of deliverance, worship, living water, new creation, and priesthood, we see how John presents Jesus as the one who fulfills God’s work of forming a people who are freed to worship and serve Him.

We walk through key moments in John’s Gospel—from “the Word tabernacling among us,” to the promise of living water, Sabbath rest, and Jesus breathing the Spirit on His disciples after the resurrection. Reading John alongside Exodus helps bring these moments into sharper focus and deepens our understanding of what it means to be made God’s children.

The session closes by reflecting on the Church’s identity as a kingdom of priests. Rather than treating priesthood exclusively as something reserved for a few, the conversation centers on forgiveness, reconciliation, and intercession as essential parts of Christian life and witness for all who share in the Spirit of Christ.
